The Function of Theatre

The most important function of theatre, as I see it, is that through participating as a community in the active watching of a potent piece of theatre, the audience has the mirror of nature held up to them in such a way so that they can see, whether through the eyes of Hamlet, Willy Lohman, or any fantastic character yet to be born of the writers’ imagination, that we, as human beings, are at long last, truly all in this life together. The theatre should in its highest function, affirm our lives, enhance our understanding of each other, and bridge the gap between neighbors, friends, and enemies as we come to the supreme understanding of our common plight as people being born, living, and dying on this planet.- Me
